POKOTABI / Yoroken
和菓子&ワイン 養老軒
Located in Kyoto's Saiin neighbourhood, Yoroken crafts fruit daifuku by wrapping luscious whole fruits in pillowy mochi and subtle white bean paste, from signature mikan and kiwi to creative seasonal choices.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The colourful fruit daifuku lined up in the display counter immediately catch the eye with their juicy, fresh appeal. At Yoroken in Kyoto's Saiin district, each confection is designed to highlight the fruit itself, enfolding it in soft, tender mochi and an understated white bean paste that sweetens without overpowering.
Among the variety on offer, the mikan daifuku holds an enduring following. A small mandarin orange, meticulously peeled down past the pith, is tucked whole inside the casing; taking a bite releases a vibrant burst of sweet-tart juice that blends smoothly with the mild white bean paste. The kiwi daifuku is another highlight, commanding attention with its bold cross-section and substantial bite. Its brisk acidity and plentiful juice provide an invigorating contrast to the delicate, melting mochi.
Alongside classic strawberry daifuku, the shop features seasonal fruits such as pineapple, persimmon, and La France pear, ensuring there is something distinct to discover throughout the year. The selection also ventures beyond customary Japanese confectionery boundaries, incorporating options with cream cheese or even shibazuke pickles. Available for takeaway at the counter, these sweets make a delightful everyday indulgence or a handsome gift to take home.
